Cyber City is the upcoming battle game from Flame Quest Productions.
I was commissioned for this design back in the spring of 2013. A welcome challenge with the game demanding a fully comprehensive set of screens & icons.
Thankfully a full & interactive wireframe was provided for the project, and this allowed me to concentrate fully on the design without having to worry too much about the UX involved. With this genre of game, the UI is a large portion of the actual game, so to me it was important that each screen was composed as a piece that complimented the game assets and artwork. Whilst elements would be reused across the screens, I also wanted to add contrast to specific sections of the game that would give the feeling of familiarity to tasks that were similar in nature. A general idea developed early on was to have each screen’s feeling of decay increase vertically the closer to the base of the screen. An idea that stuck with the final designs.
We initially started with a sample set of 5 designs, 5 contrasting screens that would help determine the style going forward. The CyberPunk theme was a lot of fun to work with and offered a huge amount of scope. Industrial elements, both old & new mixed with sci-fi elements & bright neon pallete was the direction I chose. The icons were designed alongside the UI with placeholders being used initially, and I was given a great deal of freedom as to what could be used.
A huge amount of fun to work on, and look forward to seeing the game released in the not too distant future.
