“Making Shapes with ReRave Plus”
UI Design & Development
Breaks the barrier of scrolling and “matching” display methods that are typically found in other music game products from the last decade. Unique innovative gameplay that is both a challenge for experts, and fun for new players of all ages
ReRave Plus is the follow up to the highly popular & original arcade game ReRave. Step Revolution were after a brand spanking new UI, taking elements from the original and pushing it a little further with animation, motion and high impact graphics that would help grab the players attention.
Working on an arcade game was a new experience for me at the time. It brought fresh challenges to the table in both design & development & a lot was learned throughout the process (firstly that I have no rhythm!). With mobile, console or PC games you are generally dealing with a player who has already bought into the idea of the game, they’ve made the purchase, the download & they’re sat and ready to play, so you can afford to be a little more subtle with design and effects. Within the arcade, you are dealing with a highly competitive environment, from every corner machines are shining, whirring, performing pushing everything at potential customers, trying to attract the all important drop of a coin.
The UI of ReRave was designed around that principal, from the boot up screen, to the operator menu, track selection, and gameplay, it was important that the visuals of the game appeared as energetic and vibrant as possible without being over bearing. On the development side, Step Revolution had already built a robust UI engine for the game, which would handle navigation & input, a fresh scene was used to generate the Prefabs, layouts, animations & transitions, which could then be hooked into the existing code through a secondary development team.
ReRave Plus is out now in the arcades, and has proved popular due to it’s unique take on interactive rhythm games. Further development to the franchise is also undergo with a highly anticipated mobile version, and a recent relaunch of the rerave.com website (with a ton of new toys & features).
